Charlie Sheard is a leading abstractionist in the field of contemporary Australian painting. His career, extending over 40 years, has seen him increasingly immersed in the rich history of European art and the contemporary art scenes in the UK and Australia. His organically abstract works should not be misinterpreted as accidental in their application, rather reflection reveals layers of paint built-up in a deliberate series of overlapping shifts in hues, tones and textures that are years in the making.

This retrospective entitled Charlie Sheard offered an insight into Charlie Sheard’s recent experimentation with luminous and metallic paints, where form and colour interplay in harmonious arrangements. Even more so, the accompanying catalogue is an insightful interview with Drill Hall’s Director, Terence Maloon, which narrates Sheard’s material progression into this exciting period of his oeuvre.

Review by Abbey Perticato, undergraduate student studying Bachelor of Art history and Curatorship in the Centre for Art History and Theory, ANU School of Art & Design.
