The concept for this design is to connect and collect: people, nature, art.It is a separate entity from the Drill Hall Gallery and is intended to hold pieces of natural art – sculptures made from debris, paintings of landscapes, etc.
One of the aims of this design was to incorporate the wishes of the gallery director, Terence Maloon, who expressed the desire for the extension to have the ability to encourage student engagement with the Drill Hall Gallery and its content.
The sweeping circular form, terracing intervention, circulation and program have each been developed with these wishes in mind; to connect and collect students and the public into the area and create a protected and enjoyable sociocultural space.
