Award winning artist Ben Quilty is known for his bold and expressive painterly style. This major exhibition curated by Michael Desmond features recent paintings as well as rarely seen prints and drawings.   As an acute observer of the Australian male psyche, it made sense for Quilty to accept an offer to work as a war artist with the Australian Defence Forces in Afghanistan last year.  His recent work reflects the intensity of this experience. It provoked him to question and channel his understanding of personal and national histories.    Much of the new work has been developed from direct observation, describing a trigger-happy world with agitated paint, agile brushstrokes and an alert conscience.  Consistent with his personal perspective and working environment in country NSW, Quilty conducts a raw and painful interrogation of national myths of landscape and identity in this new body of work.
