The Australian National University has a lively visual and performing arts program. The Drill Hall Gallery presents a changing program of diverse and stimulating exhibitions that highlight achievements in contemporary visual arts nationally and internationally.

The ANU Drill Hall Gallery provides Canberra audiences and visitors to the national capital with opportunities to view works by leading Australian and international artists. In an innovative program, the Gallery supports the arts in the Canberra region and presents link exhibitions developed in conjunction with the wide-ranging academic interests at ANU and with major conferences and public events. International touring exhibitions and works from the University’s own extensive collection are features of the Gallery’s program.

Gallery details

The ANU Drill Hall Gallery is located in Kingsley Street, Acton (off Barry Drive). The Gallery has four distinct exhibition spaces, each with its own unique character and features.

Hanging walls in all the galleries are constructed from medium density gyprock panels. Floors are timber in all exhibition spaces

Exhibition Room 1 
A large room with two divisions at either end with 76 metres of running wall space. Height of walls is 3.41 metres and the height of the divisions is 4.2 metres. Timber floor, fixed spot lighting and natural lighting (non-direct).

Exhibition Room 2 
30 metres of running wall space. Height of walls is 3.19 metres. Timber floor, track lighting and access to natural lighting.

Exhibition Room 3
29 metres of running wall space. Height of walls is 3.28metres. Timber floor, track lighting and no access to natural lighting.

Exhibition Room 4 
ANU Art Collection permanent display.

Proposals for exhibitions

Proposals for exhibitions are invited from professional curators and should be consistent with the Gallery’s policy and contribute to the public identification of the ANU Drill Hall Gallery with work of the highest quality.

Priority will be given to proposals for exhibitions which:

• Have been curated to a professional standard.
• Represent new works at the forefront of artistic practice both in Australia and overseas.
• Are innovative and reflect issues of current critical interest.
• Promote international and cultural exchange.
• Provide opportunities for collaborations with festival events, other cultural organisations, funding agencies and sponsors.

Proposal guidelines

Proposals are assessed by the Drill Hall Gallery and Art Collection Advisory Committee which meets every three months. Proposals should be addressed to the Director of the Drill Hall Gallery.

• Exhibitions must be curated to a professional standard.
• A clear and concise written description of the exhibition or project outlining its concept and rationale (usually a single A4 page or less in length).
• Visual support material, such as slides, prints, CD-ROM or video documentation. Label slides with name of artist, title of work, date, medium, and dimensions.
• Biographical details of the artist(s) and curator(s), contact address, telephone numbers.
• A budget outline must be provided with details of funding for the exhibition including the catalogue, transport and framing of works if required.
• Preferred date of the exhibition or project.

Other gallery information

• Gallery hours are Wednesday to Sunday 12 noon to 5pm.
• Openings are usually on a Thursday evening.
• Installation of exhibitions commences in the week of the opening. If the artist or curator wish to alter the gallery (eg. colour, surface, partition) they must consult the Director well in advance. The artist would be expected to pay for the alteration and return the Gallery to its original condition at the close of the exhibition.
• Insurance policy covers works while on exhibition, for loss or damage from fire, flood and theft.
• Catalogues are not produced by the Gallery without special arrangement or additional funding.
• Promotion by the Gallery is through its usual media channels.
